Railroad tank cleanup
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is entering the final phase of a hazardous waste cleanup on Oreland Mill Road. The Tank Car Corp. was a railroad tank car rehabilitation company that operated in Oreland throughout the 20th century but is now defunct. Tank cars were buried underground to hold chemical waste from the fabrication, cleaning and painting of the working cars, and some of this has leaked out into the surrounding soil.

Hometown hero
The Fort Washington Fire Co. lost a veteran volunteer firefighter and 70-year member when George Haggar died of congestive heart failure at Abington Memorial Hospital March 13.
Haggar, who was 88, first joined the FWFC when he was 17-years-old in 1938, and served as a volunteer for 70 consecutive years, as chief from 1955 to 1971, and held elected positions in the organization for 42 years.

Jungle Joe
The Bucks County Zoo and Animal Junction is the pet-project of "Jungle" Joe Fortunato, a former pet store employee, police officer and well know wildlife educator. A 5,000-square-foot warehouse in Warwick Township has been fully converted into an indoor zoo. The zoo is inhabited by Fortunato's 80 animals including, a porcupine, aardvark, kinkajou, snakes, a macaw, a wallaby, hissing cockroaches, and kookaburra birds known for their jungle howls.
